Google has announced its largest-ever investment program in artificial intelligence, committing $24 billion to expand AI infrastructure across India and the United States. The initiative aims to scale computing power and build new data centers to meet the growing global demand for AI services.
Investments in India and the US
As part of a five-year plan, Google will invest $15 billion to establish its first dedicated AI campus in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, India, including a data center and an international subsea cable gateway.
An additional $9 billion will be allocated to expand existing data centers in South Carolina, including two new facilities in Dorchester County and upgrades in Berkeley County.
Economic and Workforce Impact
According to Thomas Kurian, CEO of Google Cloud, the projects will create high-paying jobs and drive technological innovation in both countries. Alphabet and Google President Ruth Porat emphasized the initiatives will train local specialists for work in the technology and energy sectors, while Google will also provide grants for 160 interns in South Carolina.
Global AI Infrastructure Expansion
This investment follows earlier announcements of $5.4 billion in Belgium and $6.3 billion in the UK to advance AI research and data center capacity. Analysts note that this cycle reflects a new phase in the technology boom, with major IT companies like Microsoft, Meta, and OpenAI investing heavily in energy-intensive data centers and chip manufacturing.
Experts highlight that these initiatives are shaping the infrastructure for the next generation of AI worldwide.
